Amazon Web Services (AWS) accounts are created with a root user as the main user. This user account should only be used for adminstrative tasks such as examing billing and costs and creating other users. Here we are going to create a new user with permissions. First log in to your account. Then in the searchbar on the upper left, enter “IAM”. Select “IAM” from the dropdown.

On the Identity Access Management (IAM) page, select “Users” from the left menu.

On the Users page, click “Create User”.

Enter a creative name for your user – such as “datajammers-user”. Click the box labelled “Provide user access to the AWS Management Console”. Click “Next” at the bottom-right of the page.

On the “Set permissions” page (step 2), select “Attach policies directly”. Under “Permissions policies”, click the second option in the dropdown – “AdministratorAccess”. Click “Next” at the bottom right page corner.

On the “Review and create” page (Step 3) review new values and click “Next”. On the “Retrieve Password” step, click “Download .csv file”. This will give you the information needed to log in to the console as the newly created user; rather than using the root user account. Click “Return to users list”.

The new user should be listed.

Click into this user and exam the permissions if desired. Note that this user has Admin Access and should only be used for tutorials. Don’t distribute this user account and/or password, because this account has permission to launch expensive services and run up a steep AWS bill in a matter of minutes. Always delete resources created by this user once they are not needed.
